Remembering Parihaka

Kia Ora, today we remembered Parihaka at Waikowhai Primary . Today we all wore white and made headbands with feathers on it (more info down) in a symbol of peace.

Parihaka is a place for people to just come and stay if you had no home. Anyone is allowed to come from any place in the world.  Soon the government tried to take the land off the people who were there first. They did not want to be violent so instead of fighting they just pulled out pegs that the government put in to have the land. They danced to stop them. They did not be mean and now we celebrate it for what they did and their non-violence.

We made these head bands too and added feather or feathers on to it. First we got a piece of card and did some patterns on it.

Then we got a bit of tape and stuck down some feathers on it.

Making a Paper Mache Weather Balloon

Kia ora, and this is how you can make a paper mache balloon.

TITLE:

Paper mache balloons.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS:

  • BALLOON
  •  GLUE
  • NEWSPAPER
  • VASELINE
  • PAINT BRUSH
  • CONTAINER
  • OLD TABLE CLOTH
  • PAINT

METHOD:

  • Put the OLD TABLE CLOTH on your work area.
  • Rip the NEWSPAPER in three different containers for the size of your fingers making a circle.
  • Make sure you have a lot of newspaper and Glue
  • Pour the glue into a different CONTAINER.
  • Blow up your  BALLOON to a good size.
  • Rub your balloon with VASELINE.
  • Dip your paper into the glue but not too much.
  • Stick it to your balloon and do that till it is covered in paper and glue.
  • You can use a Paint brush as well as your fingers.
  • Put glue to flatten it down
  • Let it dry for a night.
  • Repeat step 6-9 till you have done 5 or more layers.
  • Paint your the base colour and wait for it to dry for the night
  • Repeat that step again.
  • When that dries, add detail to your balloon.
  • You are done.

I liked painting my decarotions balloon.

I learnt that if you take a short cut when you make a paper mache balloon it makes it a long cut.

I found adding the newspaper layers on balloon.

Have you ever done paper mache? If you have how was it? If not try!

Netball

Kai ora my name is Danielle and I am from Manukau @ Waikowhai primary school.

I am part of an amazing netball group called the magic team that we play on Monday after school. In the group was Darcey-Rose, Jasleen, Eliza, Honor, Deezhanay, Mo, Alanna, Jodece and me. Before we went we had an hour practice.  We did drills like ‘cut the cake’ and all our boundaries that we use in netball. I am centre in the games I have played and these times it was raining so much. On the first game we played I was attack but we did not get any points. Then the second match we played on the same day I got hit on the head and it was sore. The second game won the first match because the other team could not make it then the second match we did not win but we got our first points. We got 2 they got 3. When I got home, I was so wet.
